How to Use a Rudraksha Mala for Japa

  1. Hold the mala in the right hand, between thumb and middle finger
  2. Begin at the bead adjacent to the Sumeru (head bead) — never cross the Sumeru
  3. Move one bead per repetition of the mantra, pulling toward you
  4. When you reach the Sumeru, reverse direction for the next round
  5. Traditional practice: 108 repetitions per mala round

Preparing Your Rudraksha for Meditation

  • Wash in clean water and dry completely
  • Apply a light coating of sesame or sandalwood oil
  • Hold the bead while chanting Om Namah Shivaya 108 times before first use
  • Keep the mala in a dedicated pouch — separate from everyday objects
